General Information:
Zaragoza is the capital of Aragon with a long historical tradition extending back into Caesar Augustus' times. The core of the city, called
El Tubo, lies on the southern bank of the river Ebro. Zaragoza is called the windy city due to
el cierzo, a wind blowing almost every day. The old part of the town is now the site of many bars, restaurants and hotels. East of the old centre, at the
Plaza del Pilar, is the
Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar. Another building worth visiting is the
Aljaferia. The Aljaferia houses the biggest muslim building outside Andalucia. The market is a must for daily shopping!
The campus of the Universidad de Zaragoza is near the parc
Primo de Revera. This is the place where most departments and faculties are located: faculties of natural sciences, law, and medicine, the language school, the university sporting facilities. Some what north of the campus, at
Gran Via, is the faculty of Business Administration and Economics. Spanish courses for foreigners at the language school are offered at the beginning of every semester by the university of Zaragoza.
Going out
There are two main areas for going-out and enyoing the night live: the
Casco Viejo (the old part of the city) and
La Zona (in the eastern part of Zaragoza). The Casco Viejo is an area of narrow streets with many bars and discothecas. Bars worth trying are: La Cucaracha, serving nice shots, good music, and La Casa del Locos, the place to be for exchange students on Thursdays. La Zona is the place to be at weekends. It is the main area of Zaragoza's youngsters with modern bars/disco's, and some snackbars.
How to find an accomodation
Finding a room or appartment is not that difficult. Most Spanish students are living with their parents and there is a high overturn of exchange students at the end/beginning of every term. There are several ways to find an accommodation in Zaragoza. The university publishes a list of rooms and apartments to let. Another possibility is to stay at the guest house of the university, which is situated next to the campus. Rooms for rent are also advertised on the boards of the different faculties.
